Aircraft Carriers & AIDS

21 July 2003

The annual cost of operating a US Navy aircraft carrier is $450 million, and there are 12 of these in general operation. Carriers have a crew of up to 5000 people on board.

$450 million is the same amount of money that the government of Mozambique asked other governments to contribute in 2000 to help rebuild the country's infrastructure, agriculture, health care, and education systems after floods devastated much of the country and left half a million people homeless.

450 million dollars could also be used to treat 750,000 HIV-positive people in Africa for a year.
