Rate of US troop desertion set to overtake that of Vietnam

28 August 2006

The number of soldiers who deserted during all 15 years of the conflict in Vietnam was 50,000, a number that could be easily overtaken by the army's current rate of 40,000 in the past six years.

"It is impossible to put a precise figure on the number of American troops who have left the army as a result of the US involvement in Iraq. The Pentagon says that a total of 40,000 troops have deserted their posts (not simply those serving in Iraq) since the year 2000. This includes many who went AWOL for family reasons," reports the Times of London.
